Marrakech Secrets and hidden sides

Marrakech, often referred to as the “Red City” due to its distinct red sandstone buildings, is a vibrant and bustling metropolis that seamlessly blends ancient traditions with modern influences.

Overview

While tourists have an overwhelming amount of places to visit and things to do in the city like Jemaa el-Fna, Koutoubia Mosque, and Majorelle Garden there are many other undiscovered gems, and quietly held secrets that provide a truer form of cultural understanding to Marrakech.

Itineraries

Of course Marrakech has its focus attractions  the famous palaces, and the bustling squares overtaken by all the social media dependent consumers of the moment. However, can I let you in on a little secret? The real charm of the city lies within the backstreets. Wander those jumbled constructions, discover a historic crumbling mausoleum that is hardly ever seen on any tour guide, have a meal in a rundown hole in the wall where the locals go to eat, and you will find the real story of Marrakech. There is something magical about the unexpected; and the unexpected is everywhere in Marrakech, and the best part is to put down the books and so-called travel guides and see what you find.

Marrakech’s best-kept secret is the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter of the city. It is partially hidden from principal tourist routes, and with a little wandering, provides great history and culture. There are many interesting Jewish historical sites to visit, and many synagogues that have been lovingly preserved. The Lazama Synagogue is one of the oldest in the city, dating back to the 15th century. Wandering around the Mellah, visitors can experience the colors and smells of the spice market; it is as Moroccan as it gets.

Another hidden treasure is the Saadian Tombs. They are not hidden per se as they are now open to the public, but from the 18th century until they were rediscovered in 1917, they had been lost to history! The Saadian Tombs date back to the time of Sultan Ahmed al-Mansur when he ruled in the late 16th century. It is a great example of Islamic architecture, with beautiful carvings and details. For history and art lovers, this is a must-see site.

If a little break away from the busy center is needed, the Menara Gardens is the perfect escape. The garden, dating back to the 12th century was constructed by the Almohad ruler Abd al-Mu’min. It includes an olive grove that surrounds a large reflective pool with the stunning backdrop of the Atlas Mountains.
