Itineraries
As we travel away from the city, the landscape continues to change. The sights and sounds of the city fade away and we are immersed in the sublime beauty of the Moroccan countryside. The countryside consists of rolling hills and little villages. We see glimpses of rural life that has changed little over the centuries. In the distance, we can see the Atlas Mountains, which rise dramatically, their snowy caps set against the dry flat plains below. The journey to Merzouga is not just a drive to a destination; it is a journey to the essence of Morocco. Along the way, we will drive through towns like Erfoud and Rissani, where you can have the opportunity to move through the local atmosphere of markets filled with spices, textiles, and more traditional crafts. These are fantastic opportunities to meet local people and try authentic Moroccan cuisine, such as tagine, or a loaf of bread straight from the bakery. As we drive closer to Merzouga, the landscape continues to change. For the final leg of the drive, we are in the desert and I use this time to prepare you for the impeccable Sahara desert lying ahead. The moment we arrive in Merzouga, there are enormous dunes reaching towards the sky with the golden sun falling behind them: a humbling and awe–inspiring sight.
The experience is surreal; as night begins to fall, the desert changes into an expansive and tranquil area, with only the soft Voice of wind across the sand providing sound and action. This transit from Morocco to Merzouga is more than just a journey; it is a journey through the complex, diverse landscapes and cultures that typify this North African treasure. Whether you are looking for a bit of action or just a moment of tranquillity, this journey will give you however much you desire of either.
Our journey will start bright and early as you leave Marrakech. Travelling across the splendid scenery of the High Atlas Mountains. We will take our time exploring the kasbahs, and enjoy a local lunch. In the afternoon we will continue on towards Ouarzazate, the “Gateway to the Sahara”. Depending on time, we may visit the film studios there too. After hopefully having enough time, we will eventually arrive at Dades Gorges, where you will spend the night. Enjoy dinner at your lodge whilst soaking in the stunning views of steep cliffs and winding roads.
