Our adventure starts off in Marrakech – a lively city, bursting with life, famous for its bustling souks (markets), magnificent palaces and the amazing Jemaa el-Fnaa square. After arriving and settling into a traditional riad, we have some time to venture into Marrakech and wander through its medina (old town), enjoy all the delicious local food such as tagine and mint tea, and prepare ourselves for our hike, making sure all our gear is in order.
An early morning transfer will get you from your accommodation and whisk you away from Marrakech, to a charming little village in the High Atlas Mountains called Imlil. Stepping foot onto some of the best hikes in Morocco! You will start the hike with a trek into Toubkal National Park. You will see beautiful terraced fields and some small Berber villages, giving you a feel for the daily lives of these local communities. You will spend the night in either a mountain refuge place or in a local guesthouse.
Your early morning transfer will take you from your accommodation to the delightful little village of Imlil, in the High Atlas Mountains. You can expect to find yourself on some of the best hikes in Morocco! You’ll begin with a trek into the Toubkal National Park, with views of terraced fields and a number of small Berber villages, giving you a sense of the daily lives of these local communities. During your adventure, you’ll spend one night in a mountain refuge place or alternatively, a local guesthouse.
Waking up early, you make your final ascent to the summit of Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa (4,167 meters / 13,671 feet). The climb is steep, difficult but rewarding. As you reach the summit, you are met with fantastic 360-degree views over the Atlas Mountains and beyond. You take in the views, take all the photos and memories before heading back down to base camp to rest!
With breakfast complete at your base camp, you begin your descent down the valley back towards Imlil. The return journey now offers a different perspective on the beautiful terrain you covered in the opposite direction previously. On arrival back to Imlil, you will be transferred over the High Atlas Mountains through the scenic Tizi n’Tichka pass to Aït Benhaddou, an ancient fortified village that’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been seen in numerous movies and TV shows.
The day begins with visits to kasbahs and winding streets in Aït Benhaddou. This historic site shows Morocco’s architecture and heritage. Later in the afternoon, we travel west to follow one of the small roads to Essaouira on the Atlantic coast. Essaouira is famously unhurried, with whitewashed buildings and blue shutters and lively arts. Essaouira will be a pleasant contrast to the mountains.
You will spend the last day in Morocco enjoying the quaint and charming medina of Essaouira, sandy beach, and busy port. Whether you choose to explore art galleries, visit local markets for gifts or just relax with fresh seafood by the ocean, a stunning sunset will shine on your thoughts of Morocco’s many different landscapes. You are left fulfilled and inspired by your experience in Morocco.
FAQ
here’s the low-down. Morocco is pretty safe for solo women, especially if you stay in tourist areas. You don’t need to be dangerous, but dress a bit conservatively and be aware of what’s going on around you. People are not crazy sexist over there (although yes, you will get catcalled). I never felt that I was in danger like legit danger. Just have your head on as the same would in any city.
Easy, don’t over-pack like , You want to bring thin, breathable shirts for the sweaty afternoons but you want a jacket/hoodie because nights can get very chilly. Hiking boots are mandatory . Sunscreen and a hat (and water bottle, ) are also great to have. also bring a small first aid kit ( get clumsy sometimes), a power bank, and basic toiletries.
The Atlas Mountains are a whole thing. The Toubkal National Park is a classic, and then there is Ait Bouguemez Valley which is beautiful, feels a bit like a fairy tale
Dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees. Interact politely with locals and make an attempt to remember a few expressions in Arabic or French to display your respect and interest in their culture.
