To arrive at Chefchaouen, famous for its striking blue-washed buildings, you will need to take a train to the town of Asilah and then change to a taxi. After exploring the delightful streets, dine at a sustainable restaurant with a meal sourced locally.
On this day, we‘ll spend it hiking in the surrounding Rif Mountains or exploring the Akchour Waterfalls, and spending time with local artisans to find out more about traditional crafts. We‘ll have another overnight in Chefchaouen.
Take a taxi back to Asilah, then get the train to Fes. At Fes, book stays at a Riad that has sustainable practices, explore the historical medina, visit Al Quaraouiyine University.
Explore the local souks and tanneries, and eat and drink authentic Moroccan food during your second day in Fes. You may even want to participate in a cooking class highlighting regionally grown foods.
You can also visit a second imperial Moroccan city, Meknes, by a short train ride. Visit sites of historical importance like the Heri es-Souani granaries and Bab Mansour. Overnight in a green accommodation.
Travel by train to Rabat, the capital of Morocco, and uncover famous sites like the Chellah Necropolis and the Hassan Tower. Before checking into the sustainable hotel, view the Bouregreg River in the evening.
Catch a train to Casablanca the next morning. Take in the city’s deco architectural style and visit the Hassan II Mosque. Consider dining at places that emphasize locally or sustainably produced ingredients.
Travel from Casablanca to Marrakech by train. While in Marrakech, tour the medina’s souks, and experience the exhilarating atmosphere of Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Choose accommodations that support more sustainable practices.
On your final day tour some of the great sites like the Saadian Tombs, Bahia Palace, and Jardin Majorelle. And make sure, before you leave, to participate in a workshop or in one of many locally led tours focused on cultural preservation.Â
