Pottery workshop

A Moroccan pottery workshop begins with a warm welcome by the local artisans who are eager to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for the craft. Participants are introduced to the various types of clay used in Moroccan pottery, from different regions of the country. The clay is prepared with care, and often too much kneading and wedging to eliminate the air bubbles for the proper consistency.
The most exciting part of an on-site workshop is working with clay and exploring the molding process. Under the tutelage of the skilled potters in the workshop, participants can mold and shape their clay using traditional tools such as wooden paddles and metal scrapers. The potter’s wheel, often a main attraction of workshops, offers a captivating experience where novice potters and seasoned artists alike can be mesmerized by the spinning of the clay on the wheel. One of the most interesting aspects of a Moroccan pottery workshop is learning about the authentic glazing and decorating techniques that make Moroccan pottery truly unique and original. The artisans demonstrate how to apply brilliant glazes made from natural minerals and pigments; there are numerous patterns and artworks that can be decorative to the Pottery piece. The geometrical shapes and natural floral patterns can free your imagination for your own story to be steeped in cultural symbolism.

As participants create their pieces they begin to understand what the firing process does when it transforms raw clay into a usable piece of ceramic art. Many traditional kilns, powered by lumber or gas, operate at very high temperature ranges that allow for vitrification. There is a palpable excitement to see pieces taking their place in a kiln, as they will begin (and complete) their transformation into usable and beautiful ceramic art. In addition to the much discussed topic of potter techniques, pigmented stains and glazes, workshops in Morocco offer an even deeper connection to the culture and people. Most workshops occur in both beautiful and quaint villages and towns, which afford participants the opportunity to explore the relevant and bustling souks (markets), enjoy the taste of classic Moroccan dishes, and engage with local community members who have developed their craft for probably 10 – 30 years.
