Title: Moroccan Adventures: Enjoying Getting Lost (In the Best Way) in the Maghreb So, it’s kind of hard to imagine – Morocco is not a place; it is an attack on your senses. I mean colors that shock you awake, smells that make your stomach rumble, and sounds that stick in your brain for days. I promise you, every alley has its own mystery, and I assure you, I was lost more times than I would ever like to admit (not one regret). So buckle up. Let me take you through the good, the weird, and the downright magical parts of my adventures in Morocco.

Our expedition begins in Marrakech, a city alive with energy and excitement. From meandering the winding streets of the medina to haggle in the bustling souks for your haul of unique treasures, Marrakech is a complete sensory experience, in the best way possible. We immerse ourselves in the dazzling blur of Djemaa el-Fna, home to snake charmers, storytellers, and crowd appealing acrobats fighting for your attention, with a haze of smoke and mouth-watering aromas surrounding you. In addition to the bustle and energetic chaos, Marrakech is also tranquil and beautiful. We find the tranquility in the Majorelle Gardens and beauty in the history of the Bahia Palace. As the sun sets, we make our way to a rooftop riad, experiencing the magical transformation of Marrakech as the city becomes a sparkling expanse of lights.

Chapter 2: Trekking through the Atlas Beyond the City Leaving the city behind the adventure unfolds in the beautiful ruggedness of the Atlas Mountains. Our trek through the stunning scenery of the High Atlas passes picturesque remote Berber villages and fabulous fertile valleys, full of terraced fields. Along the way we encounter nomadic shepherds migrating with their flocks, challanging rocky slopes under snow-capped peaks, and long-desired and splendid waterfalls emerging over cliffs of ancient volcanic rock. It is an adventure that concludes with our final night in the Atlas sleeping in a traditional Berber camp underneath the stars. We recalled earlier days, sitting with our Berber hosts around a warm fire, and staring up at the magnificence of the starry African evening. It was absolutely magic; pausing time, forgetting worldly concerns and bonding.

Chapter 3: Sahara Dreams No trip to Morocco is complete without a visit to the Sahara Desert; our next stop is the charming town of Merzouga, where we embark on a camel trek into the desert. The experience of heading into the endless dunes is like no other, and the whole experience feels surreal, gliding across the sand as the desert wraps around us, with sounds of the camels’ footsteps and the occasional wind creating ambiance we won’t soon forget. We smoothly transitioned from the dunes to our camp in a comfortable tent, just as the sun set, to a delicious Moroccan dinner. After dinner on a beautiful cool night under the stars, we got to enjoy a lovely display of Berber music and dance. Mediating on the soft sounds of the Berber music, we fell asleep surrounded by some soothing desert breezes, and the promise of more adventures ahead.

Chapter 4: Coastal Charms Departing the desert, we drive toward the coast, chasing the bright blue embrace of the Atlantic. In Essaouira, a classic seaside town, we ramble through the twisting alleyways and catacombs of the medina and bask in the bright white buildings with blue shuttering. As we walk the ancient ramparts, we stop to watch fishermen pull in their daily catch and seagulls drift overhead. Further down the coast in Casablanca, a city of contrasts, we witness the magnificent Hassan II Mosque and its stunning minaret. Strolling the Corniche, with views of the water and city come together, we prepare our sendoffs from the land and the waters ahead.

In summary, we will cherish the memories we made along this trip. From walking the historical streets of Marrakech, to being astounded by the vast open space in the Sahara, we embraced the beauty, diversity, and adventure Morocco provided us. Until next time, we wish you travel amazement and discovery!
